The only thing surviving from their ancestors
was a Greek festival, with beautiful rites,
with lyres and flutes, contests and wreaths...
And so their festival always had a melancholy ending
because they remembered that they too were Greeks…

The Greeks in Greece or ourselves? Why is it their responsibility first and not ours? everybody's? who assigns that responsibility? who takes it on?"
Personally, I hate the loss. That gradual loss of the language, the withdrawal of expressions, the forsaking of words we used to use so intimately. That's what I'd like to preserve. No patriotic fanfare, photo ops or even pessimism. The cause is much more noble and selfish at the same time.zorgiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01752237614672640044noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619296676619293324.post-14705544731411044132009-10-03T21:30:00.000-07:002009-10-03T22:39:08.817-07:00Ανελλήνιστοι δεν είμαστεHere is the Cavafy poem that inspires this blog:

Poseidonians

[We behave like] the Poseidonians in the TyrrhenianGulf, who although of Greek origin, became barbarized as Tyrrhenians or Romans and changed their speech and the customs of their ancestors.
